Class Structure
At the Mui Wing Chun Wu Shu Academy the curriculum is divided into five levels, which systematically places students in the academy’s curriculum.
The purpose of the academy’s grading system allows students and instructors to know exactly what their goals are for each level are and how to achieve them.
Beginner:
All students start off as “Beginners” and learn the system from its very beginning.
At this level students learn the foundations that will support them throughout their Wing Chun journey.
Students with prior training in Wing Chun will be assessed and their appropriate grade determined.
Level One:
Level One is divided into four sub-levels, 1, 1A, 1B and 1C. Each of these levels represents a step towards learning the first two of Wing Chun’s forms, the Sui Lum Tao and Chum Kiu and accompanying techniques.
Level One students will also learn the beginnings of Chi Sao, Wing Chun’s “sticky hands” sensitivity training.
Level Two:
Level Two is also divided into four-sub levels.
In level two students learn the next two forms, Bui Ji and the Wooden Dummy.
Level Two students will also learn the more refined levels of Chi Sao and incorporate sparing into their training.
Level Three:
Level Three is also divided into four sub-levels
Level Three students learn the final two forms, the Pole Form and the Butterfly Knife Form.
Level Three, students also learn to incorporate everything they have learned through the forms and technique training, including Chi Sao, and turn Wing Chun into an integrated system.
Level Four:
Level Four is the culmination of a student’s training. By level four they will have learned the entire system and be well on their way to forging it into a unified and holistic system of self-defence and training their bodies to do Wing Chun as a reflex reaction beyond thought.
At Level Four, after years of training, one could say the student begins to learn what Wing Chun really is.
Gradings:
Gradings are generally held every 4 to 6 months, or when needed.
